The Youth Helmet needs to fit properly to ensure maximum protection. One that is too large can defeat its purpose. This is especially important in your child’s younger years because their young necks are not fully developed. Most Youth Helmets are designed with a lightweight composite shell which will help keep you young rider’s neck fatigue to a minimum.

Proper fit starts with the measuring the circumference of the child’s head, which is done by wrapping a flexible tape measure around the forehead and back of head – approximately where a headband is worn.

Since head shape can vary you should test fit the helmet by gently pulling the chinstraps outward just enough to spread the helmet as you ease it over the child’s head. If you can pull the helmet on without having to spread the helmet with your hands then the helmet is too big and it will not fit right. If this is the case then the helmet should not be worn.

Now you want to fasten the chinstrap so it is snug with the mouth closed. Actually it should be a little bit uncomfortable when the child try to open their mouth. The helmet fits right when the skin moves with the liner of the helmet when you try to move the helmet forward and backward and from side to side with both hands on the side of the helmet.

This ensures that on a given impact, way more energy is being absorbed by the Youth Helmet, and way less is being transferred to the rider’s head.
